세계 2차대전으로 나찌와 스탈린 사이에서 고래등 터지는 상황에 처한 Martel 가족이 죽을 고비와 더불어 온갖 어려움을 극복하고 자유를 찾아 미국으로 탈출하여 꿈에 그리던 낙원도 찾고 행복하고 충만한 삶을 영위한 이야기. 동요하지 않는 확고한 믿음의 힘이 놀랍다. 이 책의 주인공들처럼 절박한 상황이나 심정을 경험하고 싶지는 않지만, 자유를 너무 당연하게 생각하며 살아온 나 자신을 뒤돌아보게 됐다. 절대적인 믿음을 갖지는 못하더라도 쉽게 포기하거나 좌절하는 일은 하지 말아야겠다.
