
엄마가 차려주는 음식을 가리지 않고 잘 먹으면 되는 시절은 진작에 끝났다는 사실을 절감했다. 성인병으로만 알고 있던, 유전이 가장 큰 요인이라고 믿었던 당뇨가 2000년 이후에 출생한 아이들에게서 세명에 한명 꼴로 나타난다고 (2009년에 개봉된) 이 다큐멘터리에 나온다. 브로콜리같은 야채가 너무 비싸서 (당뇨병 걸린 아저씨 및 그의 가족들이) 싼 햄버거와 탄산음료를 주식처럼 먹을 수 밖에 없다는 말을 들으니 마음이 무거웠다. 돈에 눈이 먼 자본가들과 위정자들이 (특히나 가난한) 사람들을 죽음으로 몰아가고 있다는 생각이 든다.

The average meal travels 1500 miles from the farm to the supermarket. Buy foods that are grown locally. Shop at farmers’ markets. Plant a garden. (Even a small one)
Cook a meal with your family and eat together.
Everyone has a right to healthy food. Make sure your farmers’ market takes food stamps. Ask your school board to provide healthy school lunches.
The FDA and USDA are supposed to protect you and your family. Tell Congress to enforce food safety standards and re-introduce Kevin’s Law.
If you say grace, ask for food that will keep us, and the planet healthy.
